"End of day" glass was any item made by the glassworkers in their own time at the end of the day using up the remaining molten glass in the pots. It therefore tended to be a mixture of all sorts of colours. Another name for the same kind of item was a "frigger". Sometimes these were fun items, like walking sticks or animals made of glass. Sometimes they were items for the glassworkers own home; and sometimes they were for sale.

In some parts of Britain (Nailsea and Stourbridge for example) the glassworkers made friggers in their own time on Saturday's and displayed them in a parade on the Sunday.

However, over the years the name "end of day" glass has been applied to any glass item which has colours "marvered in", that is specks of coloured glass that have been laid out on a table or "marver" and rolled into the hot glass, then melted in, like the item on the left. The names "spatter glass" or "spangle glass" or "Nailsea glass" are applied to glass that has specks of colour marvered into the hot glass and these kinds of glass are often called "end-of-day glass".

The name has also been applied to paperweights containing scrambled pieces of cane.
Meet wildlife artist Celia Smith… Celia’s lov Meet wildlife artist Celia Smith…

Celia’s love of wire was inspired by a visit to Sophie Ryder’s studio, and although she is a huge fan of the iconic mobile kinetic sculptures of Alexander Calder she often sites her father’s creative use of baler twine and mending gates and fences on the farm she grew up on as no doubt another subconscious influence.

Not unlike the glass blowers of Murano, using whatever pieces were left over at “the end of the day” Celia’s careful choice of reclaimed wires and materials produce her intricate and etherial pieces, animated, swooping and gliding, across sky and paper.

She has appeared in glossy magazines from Country Life to Elle Decor and exhibits regularly in galleries or group exhibitions all around the country and her work has been exhibited as far away as Germany and New Zealand, but for this exhibition she has decided to chose her home town of Corsham. Now with an MA in multi disciplinary printmaking she has been experimenting with printing with and embossing wire drawings.

Her sculptures and prints will be available for purchase throughout the exhibition which is running here @no19corsham in #Corsham from the 16th to the 31st October
